Why positioning should come before your redesign
Redesigns fail when nobody agreed what the business stands for. Here's the work that should happen first.

Most redesign briefs describe a feeling: modern, premium, trustworthy. Those words mean something different to everyone in the room, which is why review cycles turn into taste debates.
Positioning fixes this. Before design starts, agree who you serve, what you do better than the alternatives, and what you deliberately do not do. Write it in plain language and get leadership to sign it.
With positioning agreed, design reviews change character. Instead of 'I don't like the blue', the question becomes 'does this express the position we agreed?' That is a question a team can answer objectively.
The output does not need to be a hundred-page document. A one-page positioning statement, a messaging hierarchy and three proof points are usually enough to align a team and unblock design.
