Design systems for teams that aren't Google

You don't need a hundred components. You need tokens, six patterns and documented rules.

Small teams often abandon design systems because they try to build an enterprise-scale library before shipping anything.

Start with tokens: colour, type scale, spacing, radius and shadow. Tokens alone eliminate most inconsistency, because they remove the need to make arbitrary choices.

Then document the six or seven patterns you actually repeat — buttons, form fields, cards, navigation, sections and modals. Everything else can stay bespoke until it repeats three times.

Keep documentation next to the code. A system that lives in a separate tool nobody opens will drift within a month.
